I found a coffee table in an alley of my Glover Park Neighborhood of D.C. The top was in bad shape around the edges, but worth saving. I stripped and sanded it, routed the edges, stained it with Minwax “Golden Pecan,” finished it with three coats of Minwax water-based clear satin Polycrylic, and reattached it to the frame with several screws. To increase stability and add some design flair, I added newly purchased decorative brackets in the corners of the two ends. To increase the table’s surface area and add a contrasting design element, I created a lower shelf using newly purchased tongue-in-groove pine boards. I cut them to size, attached them to a piece of 1/8-inch underlayment, routed the edges, stained it with Minwax “Golden Pecan,” finished it with three coats of Minwax water-based clear satin Polycrylic, and attached it to the lower rails with screws. I think with this table, like the best upcycling projects, the final product is greater than the sum of its parts.
