I had several equal-sized pieces of pallet wood, already fully sanded, leftover from another project—a rolling foot rest/stool for my office. Wondering what to do with them, I pondered a square frame of some kind. Completely by coincidence, the dimension of the interior opening was 12 x 12 inches, exactly the same size as some cork panels I already had, leftover from yet another project; thus, no cutting was required before assembly! The thickness of the wood was also a good match for the thickness of the cork. I used Minwax “Espresso” stain and three coats of Minwax water-based clear satin Polycrylic on the pallet wood. I made a backing piece out of some leftover 1/8-inch thick underlayment and assembled it all with glue.
