This is the first mosaic project I ever made. Several years ago, my wife Stephanie gave me a gift certificate for a two-day introductory course, one-on-one with a master mosaic artist in Pennsylvania. This was the design I had in mind well before going up there, and although the instructor usually had first-time students take on smaller, simpler projects, I was grateful that she indulged me in this one. The design is an enlarged print taken directly from our dog at the time, the late, great Xena Warrior Princess Dog. The raw materials for the top (4x4 ceramic tiles and ¾-inch plywood) were newly purchased from Home Depot, the legs and connecting rails came from an end table that I found sometime later in an alley near my house. It’s about 25 inches in diameter. We keep it in our basement guest room/library. It was also the first of a few black-and-white ceramic tile mosaics that I’ve made, a strong, graphic look that has always appealed to me.
