I found a white laminate coffee table with these legs in an alley in my Glover Park neighborhood of D.C. If not an actual Ikea item, it was certainly reminiscent of one. The cheap pressed wood table top was of no interest, but I salvaged the legs and steel brackets. Around the same time, in another nearby alley, I found a mid-sized wooden table painted purple, with stickers and scribbles on the surface that clearly indicated it had been a children’s craft/art table. (Unfortunately, no “before” picture is available owing to an unfortunate incident with my wife’s iPhone.) I used the frame and legs for a different project (Patriotic Cushioned Bench with Shelf and Storage Baskets) but used the top for this project. I stripped and sanded off the paint, applied a couple coats of Minwax “Ebony” stain, did some minor sanding on the edges to give it slightly used/aged look, and finished with three layers of Minwax water-based clear satin Polycrylic. Finally, I attached the brackets and legs. I think it achieved the simple look and dark-light contrasting tones I was after.
