The upcycled item here is the frame. I found it in an alley in my Glover Park neighborhood of D.C. The original markings on the back, referencing Arizona and 1979, made me think it might have been someone’s middle or high school woodshop project. I sanded the surface and added a light brown stain for greater richness and coated it with Minwax water-based clear satin Polycrylic. Then I just needed something to fill the frame. I used tile leftover from three other projects, including. The colors available to me made me think of an underwater scene with tropical fish. I came up with the design and did the tile work in few hours over a few nights while watching TV, to help get my mind off a terminally ill close friend. (Miss you, Wayne!) BTW, the yellow and black fish is meant to look like the angelfish I’ve seen many times when snorkeling on tropical reefs, but the other two fish I made up totally out of the (sea) blue. It hangs in our upstairs bathroom.
