My wife is often worried about how many things I find and bring back to the house to upcycle, but occasionally when she spots an interesting small item, she’ll mention the location and send me a picture. That’s what happened in this case. She saw this plant stand sitting out near the sidewalk just a couple of blocks down the street from our house. I went and rescued it right away. I used a wire brush to clean up the metal, then spray painted it metallic “Rose Gold” by Rust-Oleum. I cut a circle from ¾ inch medium density fiberboard as the base for a new top. I cut red, yellow, blue and green ceramic tiles, leftover from another project, into small random geometric shapes. I used mastic to attach the tile to the top, carefully arranging the pieces so that no two pieces of the same color are adjacent; they touch only in points/corners. I created a custom grout color and applied a waterproofing sealant to the top to protect it against spills or overflows. The top is attached to the frame with screws.
