This is one of my all-time favorite projects. I use it in my basement guest room/library, which has something of a black and white color scheme. I found the table in an alley in my Glover Park neighborhood of D.C. It was in good shape, though the original finish was a boring brown. I had painted everything but the top a glossy black but wasn’t sure what to do with the top. On a visit to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, came upon the inspiration for an upcycling project—specifically, the design of the broad sidewalk that runs for a couple of miles along the beaches of Leblon and Ipanema. The mosaic design that I created on the top is an exact small-scale copy of that sidewalk, taken from photographs I made during our visit there. I think most of the tile was left over from another project.
