I made this hall tree out of three old doors rescued from alleys in my Glover Park neighborhood of D.C. The back is one whole door, the side pieces were from a second door (the holes were already drilled into the two panels, apparently for ventilation), and the seat and front piece came from a third door. I removed the hardware and cut the various pieces to size with a circular saw. All the doors had multiple layers of paint and had to be painstakingly stripped down to natural wood. I used a belt sander and hand sanding to smooth all the surfaces and remove the paint, though some hints of the original color still show through, adding character. Luckily, the natural tone of all three doors was pretty similar, requiring only a little bit of Minwax “Golden Pecan” stain for a bit more consistency on a couple of the components. I liked the raw, natural look so much that I didn’t add and any clear coat finish. The pieces were assembled with glue, screws, and nails. I removed the glass panes from the main door and replaced them with new custom-cut mirrors. I added an old door knob and lock, salvaged from other doors, to cover the original hardware holes, and used black spray paint to make the old hardware consistent with the five new oil-rubbed bronze hooks. I really wish I had room to use this in my own house, but I don’t, so now I’m willing to sell it to a good home.
