This is a classic case up upcycling that brings together multiple finds and new buys. First, I found a mid-sized wood table in an alley in my Glover Park neighborhood of D.C. The odd height, purple paint, and stickers and scribbles on the surface clearly indicated it had been a children’s craft/art table. I used the large wood top for a different project (Ebony Coffee Table with Curved Flat Legs) but used the frame and legs for this project. I stripped and sanded off the paint. I shortened the legs to be the right height for a bench. I reinforced the corners to increase the frame’s stability. Around the same time, I found an American flag in the gutter just around the corner from my house. It had apparently blown away from someone’s house in a really strong storm. After a good washing, it became the critical inspiration for the final project. I created and added a lower shelf using new lumber. I got some navy blue paint from Home Depot and applied it to the frame, shelf, and legs. I bought the baskets from Michael’s, spray painted the bodies white, and hand painted the handles red. I created a rectangular seat base using medium density fiberboard. I bought some thick upholstery foam and batting from Joann fabric and craft store and used a staple gun to create the flag covered cushion. (Unfortunately, no “before” picture of the full table is available owing to an unfortunate incident with my wife’s iPhone.)
