I found an Ikea desk in an alley of the Burleith neighborhood of D.C., set out by a Georgetown student at the end of the school year. (The neighborhood is a good place for “picking” every year at that time.) I saved the nice solid-wood top and got rid of the rest of it. I stripped and sanded the top down to clean, natural wood; used a router to create curved edges; then finished it with Minwax “Golden Pecan” stain to add a richer character and depth. I built the support structure of 1.75-inch square legs and 1 x 2 rails, mostly using newly purchased lumber, and painted them matte black. It’s assembled with glue, nails, and screws.
