I found a pair of two-panel bifold shutter doors in an alley in my Glover Park neighborhood of D.C. Seeing them hinged together led me to consider permanently fixing them together at a 90-degree angle and converting them into some kind of tall corner shelving unit. Another factor was that they were painted on only one side, and I didn’t want to paint the unfinished side, so keeping those sides facing the wall sounded good to me. I removed the hardware and used sandpaper to give the painted side of the shutters a more distressed look. I attached them to one another with screws through a squarish, long piece of pine behind the right-angle point. I cut the shelves out of newly purchased pine boards, painted them semi-gloss black, and attached them to the shutters with screws. This was the first project I ever made out of these very common tall shutter doors.
