When I found this Ikea item in an alley in my Glover Park neighborhood of D.C., it was in perfectly good shape. But it was plain and boring. So, I removed the top and replaced it with two specially selected pieces of oak pallet wood, with nail holes, to add some character. I added an arc to the front edge for more design flair and visual interest. I sanded the boards until smooth and finished them with three coats of Minwax water-based clear satin Polycrylic. I attached them to the frame with nails, then reattached the original hooks to the underside of the shelf. Bing, bang, boom, it was done. The whole design came to me very soon after I carried the item home to my house.
