I found this frame on top of a closed trash can in an alley a few blocks from my house in the Glover Park neighborhood of D.C. It originally had thin plexiglass instead of real glass and displayed a photo of what I’m pretty sure is John Riggins (only half of his #44 jersey number is showing) during his MVP performance in the Washington football team’s 27–17 win over the Miami Dolphins in Super Bowl XVII (1983). That photo was from an NFL calendar and had replaced the apparently original picture of a herd of deer. I cut a piece of glass to fit the frame from a small stock I’ve accumulated over the years. I decided to make something considerably different from my typical faux stained-glass projects, something modern, simple, and whimsical. I get these glass tiles from Maryland Mosaics. The colors I used are Honey Gold for the body, Merlot Gold for the eyes, and Cobalt Blue for the background. They are affixed to the glass with a transparent glue. Non-sanded charcoal-colored grout takes the place of lead in a traditional stained glass window.
