I made these as Christmas presents for family members a few years ago, with the states representing where they live or where they came from. It’s something that could be hung near a door and used to hold mail, gloves, hats, coats, keys, dog leashes or whatever. I was inspired by something I had seen at an arts and crafts street sale, but my design was considerably different. I made the back and the pocket shelf out of pallet wood that I sanded smooth and stained either “Red Sedona” or “Golden Pecan,” depending on the type of wood and the colors of the state flag. I hand-carved the outline of the state and added black paint in the groove for a greater accent. As usual, I finished the wood with Minwax water-based clear satin Polycrylic. I bought the state flag license plates online and the oil-rubbed bronze hooks (to complement the black tones of the state outline and around any nail holes) from my local Ace Hardware store.
