I found this table in an alley in my Glover Park neighborhood of D.C. It originally had two fold-down leaves, but they were mostly missing when I found the piece. I removed the remaining bits and the hardware. The original top was in very rough shape, with multiple layers of paint worn away and badly damaged on the edges; it must have been kept outside for quite a while. But I salvaged it. I cut it down to work as a lower shelf, thoroughly sanded it, and applied some Minwax water-based clear satin Polycrylic. Also, I wanted a larger top. The new top came from a small table that I had purchased at an antique mall in Roanoke, Virginia. I stripped away the black paint and sanded it with a belt sander and by hand and finished with three coats of Minwax water-based clear satin Polycrylic. Fortunately, the original frame was sturdy. I stripped and sanded it lightly, applied a layer of primer, and finished it with a khaki-pale green paint (Benjamin Moore satin “Seaspray”). I attached the shelves to the frame with corner braces and screws.
