I found this chair in an alley in the Burleith neighborhood of D.C. Besides the broken cane seat, it was generally a bit scruffy. Whoever tossed it out must have figured it was beyond saving, but I didn’t—though I did think it needed a fresh new look. I disassembled all the pieces and sanded all the wood surfaces with a belt sander and by hand. I applied a coat of primer and then two coats of a khaki-pale green paint (Benjamin Moore satin “Seaspray”) from Ace Hardware. As for the seat, I created a new cushion with a bit of plywood, foam, and material—all leftover from other projects. I attached the new seat to the support frame with corner braces and screws. Finally, I reassembled all the parts. Rock on!
