The found item, a “falling rain chime box,” would have originally looked like the one below. But when I found mine, sitting on top of a trash can in an alley in my Glover Park neighborhood in D.C., it was broken and the guts were mostly missing. I almost immediately envisioned a jewelry box. I took apart the box to hand-sand away the shiny finish, reassembled it, and applied a dark brown stain to the original wood, followed by a couple coats of high-gloss varnish. I replaced the long sides of thin wood and plexiglass with medium density fiberboard and covered them with four colors of glass mosaic tiles, little squares that I cut diagonally. I used tile the same way inside the circular holes on the short sides. I also built a little removable tray and applied felt on the inside.
